By the age of 10, young Kavi was well and truly hooked on the art of vinyl digging. Although his interest in turntables began with Hip Hop, love of other musical genres including Funk, Soul, Reggae, Barrio Grooves, Afro Beat, Jazz, 80’s and R&B means Kavi-R has the skill and versatility to reach and rock any crowd.
His mixing skills and unique track selection never fails to hit the spot. His passion and professionalism has made him a respected and valued figure in the Australasian and global music industry.
For six years, Kavi managed Hardwax, the Hip Hop section within Central Station Records, playing a major role in setting up the Sydney and Melbourne stores, as well as developing and maintaining the Hardwax image nationally. In addition, Kavi was also responsible for ensuring that Central Station Records stayed ahead of the pack by sourcing rare and exclusive domestic and international products.
DJ Kavi-R has supported some of the following artists on their Australasian tours, including The Roots, DJ Revolution, De La Soul, Blackalicious, The Beat Junkies, Gang Starr, DJ Cash Money, Big Brovaz, Tha Liks, Ugly Duckling, Jean Grae, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Latyrx, DJ Craze and The Scratch Perverts.
Over a decade in the game, Kav’s got a desire to express himself and the artists he’s feeling in the mix.
In 2002, Warner Music Australia approached him to compile and create 10 track Tommy Boy Sampler mix CD, released as a bonus CD with every purchase of selected Warner artist albums such as De La Soul, Missy Elliott, Sean Paul, Lil’ Kim, Craig David, Fabolous and Mis-Teeq. This mix CD, of which 11,000 copies were pressed, acted as a teaser for the Tommy Boy’s Greatest Hits compilation.
